The new-look 2010 A's dropped a hard-fought battle in their season opener, bowing to the Cubs 5-1 on a blustery night at New Lions Field.
The A's are young and learning, but showed a lot of promise. Finn made a number of great plays at shortstop, including a brilliant run-saving catch to end the 4th inning. Brandon also played a sharp third base.
The bats were rather sleepy. Reese had three singles, and Alex had his first Majors hit, but those four hits were all the A's could muster. Cubs pitchers threw heat and struck out 13 A's batters on the night.
Luke pitched four strong innings and Reese pitched the 5th for the A's. The Cubs only managed three clean hits on the night, but combined a few walks with some A's errors to push across one run in the first inning, two in the third, and two in the fifth.
The A's only run came when Reese scored on a passed ball after singling in the second inning.
The A's will look to rebound on Saturday as they take on the always-tough Phillies at Plaisted Park.
