The A's finished the regular season with a 12-7 victory over the Pirates tonight at Plaisted. The win raised the A's record to a respectable 8-7, and the Green will enter the postseason tournament as the 3 seed.
Seven different A's players had hits tonight. Ben led the way with four singles, Reese and Luke each added a home run and a single, and Andrew, Ryan, Jameson and Eli each had singles.
The A's spotted the Pirates a 6-run lead in the top of the first inning, before striking back for one in the bottom half on a Ben RBI single.
Dylan pitched the first two innings for the A's, and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning with two consecutive strikeouts to turn the momentum.
The A's then struck for four runs and five hits in the 3rd inning to draw within 6-5, highlighted by RBI singles by Jameson and Eli.
Trailing 6-5 entering the bottom of the 4th, Ryan got the A's started with a hustling infield single. Luke then homered to give the A's their first lead of the game, and the A's added three more runs on a series of walks and stolen bases, to lead 10-6. The Green Machine then added two insurance runs in the 5th inning on a two-run homer by Reese.
Reese pitched three shutout innings of middle relief to hold the Pirates at bay, and Jameson slammed the door in the 6th, striking out two of the top Pirates hitters to preserve the victory.
The A's now look forward to the postseason, as the double-elimination tournament starts Thursday. The A's won the tournament in 2008 and finished as runners-up in 2009, so they will be looking to return to the winners circle again.
