The Cape Elizabeth 11-12 All-Stars defeated the Falmouth All-Stars 5-4 at Loring Field at Bayside Sunday night in a well-played game by both sides.
After waiting twenty-four hours because of a postponement, Tim took the mound and pitched well against a strong Falmouth squad. He registered only three strikeouts on the night, but threw strikes and allowed his defense to do the work behind him. Dylan made two running catches in right and Matt D. had a spectacular diving catch in left to end the first inning. John played well at short and Ben and Luke had nice plays at third and second respectively.
The Capers struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Reese started the game with a single to left and Dylan followed with a homer to left. The Falmouth pitcher buckled down after that and retired the side. After yielding a run in the top of the second, Cape scored two more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Tim led off with a homer to center. Matt D. then reached on an error, and pinch runner Nate advanced to third on passed balls and scored when Aaron grounded to first, beating the relay home to put the Capers up 4-1.
Falmouth plated two runs in the third to draw to within one run and their strong defense kept Cape off the scoreboard despite baserunners Bryce and Nate who each singled in the third and fourth innings respectively. Falmouth then tied the score in the fifth inning which brought the top of the Capers' order to the plate for the bottom of the fifth. After the first two batters were retired, Ben struck the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a go-ahead opposite field homerun to put Cape up 5-4. In the top of the sixth, Falmouth got their first batter on base with an infield hit. After a strikeout, Tim induced a groundball to Luke who started a beautiful 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Cape is next scheduled to play Saturday at 12:30 pm at Payson Park against an opponent to be decided this week.
