Cape Wins Tough Game Against Strong Scarborough Team

The Cape 10/11 All Stars won a well played game against a very strong Scarborough team on July 15, under the lights at volunteer Field in Westbrook.  Cape combined strong pitching, excellent defense, timely hitting, and some good old fashion small ball to come away with the win.

Brendan pitched 5 strong innings for Cape, striking out 6, walking 2, and allowing 6 hits.  Brendan was focused and composed as he battled Scarborough's hard hitting line up.  Nat S. did an excellent job coming in to close the door in the 6th, retiring the final 3 hitters by way of the K.

Cape's pitching was aided by a tremendous defensive effort.  Eli B. and Cape's other outfielders did a great job knocking down balls and limiting Scarborough's hitters to singles rather than extra base hits.  On 3 separate occasions Cape defenders made stellar plays each of which quelled Scarborough rallies.  Brett M. made a tough catch on a foul pop up that was drifting towards the Cape dug out, Patrick M. fielded a scorched line drive that helped end an early Scarborough threat, and Cal Barber made a fantastic catch in right field of a fly ball that (as an initial matter) had been hit above the lights.  Nat, Patrick, and Marshall were solid at first and up the middle, each making some nice plays.  Matt graham was solid behind the plate.

As to the offense, Cape managed 7 hits and 2 walks against Scarborough's hard throwing pitchers.  Good base running paid off Cape.  Cape took a brief lead in the top of the 3rd when Matt G. and Brendan T., each of whom had singled, scored on pass balls.  Cape took the lead for good in the 5th when Nat trippled in Marshall, who had singled, and Brett M. who had reached on a well executed bunt.  Jacob Allen also beat out a "perfectly executed" bunt to keep the pressure on.

It is worth reporting that the Cape players showed great focus and composure during this game.  During those times when Scaborough was threatening, the boys stayed calm and continued to battle.

Cape will be looking to repeat this performance when they play a very strong Westbrook team on Monday at 7:00 at Volunteer Field in Westbrook.
