The Cape Elizabeth 11-12 year old All-Stars took one step closer to the coveted district 6 championship and a berth in the state tournament with an 8-7 victory over a talented and well-coached Falmouth team at Bayside's Loring field on Saturday.

Facing a tough right-hander from Falmouth, the Capers continued their hitting ways posting two runs in the top of the first inning after Tim reached on an error, Ben worked a walk and Luke and John followed with consecutive run-scoring singles. Falmouth tied the score in the bottom of the frame with Dylan's running catch in right ending the inning and preventing further damage. Cape fell behind 4-2 in the second but struck for four runs in the top of the third. Tim singled to start the inning and Dylan followed with a line-drive homerun to left to knot the score at 4-4. Luke then followed with his second single of the game and Nate hit an 0-2 pitch the opposite way for a homerun to left to put the Capers up 6-4. They added a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-4 lead. Tim walked with one out in the fourth, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on Dylan's single. In the fifth, John hit a one-out triple and scored on a wild pitch.

Falmouth was not done, however, and crawled closer in the bottom of the fifth with a run to make it 8-5. Aaron made a running catch in center just short of the fence to end the inning with two Falmouth baserunners aboard. After going quietly in the top of the sixth, Cape needed three outs to close out the game. Falmouth got their first two batters aboard, and after a fielders choice to retire a runner at second on a nice play by pitcher Tim who fielded a sharply hit ball up the middle, Falmouth's clean-up hitter doubled to right to put the tying run at second and bring the potential winning run to the plate. Tim induced a groundball to second and Luke made a nice play to record the second out of the inning, yielding a run in the process to make it 8-7 and advancing the tying run to third. Then Tim took control, battling back from a 3-1 count to get the last out of the game on a strikeout looking to advance the Capers to the district 6 championship series.

Cape Elizabeth will face Cumberland/North Yarmouth in a best two of three series to be held at South Portland National's Pine Street complex Tuesday July 20th, Wednesday July 21st and Thursday July 22nd(if necessary), with the winner advancing to the state tournament as the district 6 champion. The team would like to thank Bayside for hosting a well-run tournament and their fans for all their support during the past two weeks.
