The Cape Elizabeth 9/10 SB All-Stars continued to take their fans on a wild roller coaster ride this week, snapping back from a tough extra inning loss to South Portland on Thursday by dispatching Scarborough 12-2 tonight in a mercy rule-shortened 4 inning game. The victory sets up a rematch with South Portland on Saturday, and again on Sunday, if necessary, for the District 6 championship. The Capers have one loss in the double elimination tournament and SoPo has posted a clean sheet, forcing the Capers to win two to claim the crown. It is familiar territory for the Capers, who turned the trick against Scarborough on consecutive nights in 2014.

On Thursday, Big Maroon battled hard but relinquished a 4-1 lead early and a 6-4 lead in the 8th to fall, 7-6. Up and down the line-up, the Capers fought, and distinguished performances were turned in by Abigail (two key outfield catches), Katharine (8 gritty innings at catcher), Kathryne (7+ terrific innings pitched), and Kat (three hits, three RBIs), but the defeat forced the Capers into an elimination game with Scarborough tonight. Consistent with their resilient and storied history, the Capers rose to the occasion.

With Kathyrne shifting to the catcher's gear, Cape turned to Clara on the hill tonight and she did not disappoint. She set the tone in the top of the 1st by striking out the side and stranding 2 runners. Good defense prevailed in Scarborough's second at bat, with Clara snaring a pop out and Dana turning the first of three 4-3 put outs to Kat during the night. Meanwhile, Cape failed to plate a runner in its first two trips to the dish, but a sense of impending doom for Scarborough began to build as the Capers hit ball after ball into play. Scarborough broke through first with one out in the 3rd on a passed ball, but Cape closed the door when Dana threw home to complete a bases-loaded fielder's choice to Katharine and Clara caught the final batter looking.

The Capers finally wore down the Scarborough pitcher in the home half of the 3rd and broke the game open with 7 runs as 13 hitters stepped up to the plate. The majority of the runs scored on walks and errors as the patient Capers carefully picked apart the Red Storm, though Abigail also executed a perfect bunt single in the middle of the scrum. The latter was part of an highlight reel bunting clinic displayed by Abigail, Dana, and Esme during the course of the game.

The Capers limited their opponent to a single run in the top of the 4th and entered the bottom of the frame determined to make a quick getaway to the championship game(s). A single by Kat was accompanied by multiple walks as patience was again a virtue for the defending state champs, who were determined to save energy for the showdown weekend. When Katharine finally crossed the plate after the last ball 4, the Capers had a tidy 12-2 victory. Hannah and Analise both contributed tonight and first year all stars Lydia, Emma, and Meghan all made the most of their at bats, getting on base and scoring runs - another complete team effort. Clara finished with 7 strikeouts in 4 innings pitched. The Capers now turn their attention to the weekend challenge.

The Capers return to Pine Street at noon on Saturday determined to force an all-for-the-marbles finale on Sunday evening. Come support the state champs! Have a dream, make a plan, do the work. Go Cape!
