The Cape Elizabeth 11-12 SB All Stars opened the 2016 District 6 tourney against Portland today with a 3-2 victory on Pine Street Field in South Portland. The Capers came out of the gates fast, hitting and running in the first two innings, posting a 3-0 lead, and looking the part of the stronger team. However, they allowed Portland to hang around and were nearly victims of a late comeback by their scrappy opponents.
In the opening frame, with Portland as visitors, Anna looked strong in striking out the side in order and establishing dominance over the Portland batters. When the Capers took their first swings, Esme and Abbey reached base early, but sound defense by Portland closed the door. After Anna faced four batters and again struck out the side, the Capers pounced in the bottom half of the second. Haley, Katharine, Kathryne, and Katherine reached base successively with no outs, scoring 2 runs on an RBI hit by Kathryne that brought home courtesy runner Hannah and then a steal of home by Katharine. Portland limited the damage by turning a smart double play at first and home, but the home half did not end before Esme added an RBI single. The Capers seemed to be just getting started but that would prove to be the third and last time they touched home plate on this day. They needed every one of their tallies.
Anna cruised through 3 innings, but a one out walk in the 4th turned out to be the first Portland run, eventually scoring on a wild pitch. She stranded two more runners over the remainder of that inning and the 5th. The Capers looked to increase their cushion in the bottom of the 5th, but were stunned by a one out bang-bang line out to the pitcher who quickly doubled a runner off first. The Capers took a 3-1 lead into the final frame.
In the top of the 6th, a lead off walk turned into a run due to errant throws with no one out. After a strikeout restored order, another error put the tying run at first base, and when that runner eventually moved to third, throats and stomachs on the Cape sideline tightened. Anna calmly dispatched the next batter with a K, though the aggressive runner on third dancing down the line after several pitches had multiple fielders darting back and forth throughout this at bat and the next. As all in attendance held their collective breath, the final batter tapped a soft roller that skipped past Anna's glove but a hard charging SS Clara scooped it cleanly and threw over to first where the long arm of Haley stretched and squeezed the ball ahead of the runner.
Game over. Breathe deep.
Additional highlights included: Anna finished 6 frames with 15 Ks... Dana laid down two textbook sacrifice bunts...Grace reached base on her first ever all star at bat and stole third with a slide that she had spent two weeks perfecting:) ... Analise and Abigail jumped on first pitch fastballs and smacked them into play. All the Capers played their parts.
Next up: Gray New-Gloucester, Pine Street, South Portland, Tuesday, 6/21, 5:45 PM. Be there. Cheer on the Gold!
All together, we are strong ... Cape!
