The Cape SB 11-12 All Stars remained in the winners' bracket of the District 6 tournament after soundly beating Gray-New Gloucester, 12-0, at Pine Street Field in South Portland this evening. The Capers jumped out on their less experienced opponents over the first 2 innings, sending 22 batters to the plate and touching the dish a dozen times, then cruised to a mercy rule-shortened 3 and 1/2 inning victory.
Most of the players reached base on hits or walks during the onslaught. Some of the biggest blows included RBI triples by Anna and Dana, an RBI double by Kat, and a two-run single by Kathryne. Esme, Abbey, Clara, Katharine, Haley, Grace, Abigail, Analise, and Hannah all made contributions to the team effort.
On the defensive side, it was predominantly a pitching clinic. Five runners reached base but no one hit a ball into play against Anna, and runners were stranded at 3rd in the final two GNG at bats. Anna struck out the side in all 4 innings, ringing up a total of 12.
The Capers worked some of the kinks out of their opening round dogfight with Portland on Sunday and tuned up for a showdown with the only other remaining winners' bracket team - Scarborough - in the South Portland half of the District 6 draw. Scarborough defeated South Portland, 6-3, on Sunday.
The team will be working hard in practices at Capano for the remainder of the week. Another big crowd is anticipated on Sunday as the Capers battle in their home-away-from-home at Pine Street field. Come out and cheer the Gold... loud!.... LOUDER!!
All together, we are strong... Cape!
