"Oh my!" are the two words most often heard from Katharine during Cape team practices. Tonight, her coaches and teammates were saying it about her. Katharine delivered the punishing strokes with a pair of triples to right-center field and driving in 4 runs in the first and third innings tonight at Pine Street Field in South Portland, staking Cape to a 4-0 lead en route to 6-2 victory over Scarborough. The Capers remain the lone undefeated team after 3 victories in the South Portland half of the District 6 bracket. On Tuesday they will face the winner of tomorrow night's elimination game between Scarborough and South Portland.
The Capers set the table nicely with a walk by Dana in the first, and bunt hits by Abbey and Esme followed by a walk to Anna that loaded the bases in the third. Katharine cleared the bases both times. The Cape scoring was completed after a fielder's choice RBI by Kat brought home Katharine in the third and later in the fifth when Dana walked, stole second, and scampered to third and home on wild pitches.
On the defensive side, Anna pitched 6 strong innings and struck out 7. She helped herself on come-backers and bunts with 6 assists to sure-handed Haley and Dana. Dana also vacuumed up three hard hit balls to second - two of them in the final inning - and snagged a pop fly for good measure. Kat settled nicely under a moderately deep fly to left and squeezed it for a key out in the second inning. Kathryne was steady behind the dish all night.
Hannah scored a run on courtesy duty and Grace, Clara, Analise, and Abigail played important roles in the team effort. The Caper victory over a strong Scarborough side positions them well as the SoPo half heavyweights continue to battle for the right to face the Westbrook half victor later this week.
The Capers are building momentum, but continue to take them one at a time, practicing tomorrow night for another barnburner on Tuesday. Go Gold!
All together, we are strong... Cape!
